Seed Time

While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.  Genesis 8:22

This was the promise given to Noah after the flood.  It was a reminder that on the 4th day of creation, God made the sun, moon and stars to separate the night and day, and for them to be signs and for seasons and for days and years.  This is hope for the soul!  Winter is losing its grip and it is time for the next season.

Spring is officially on the calander!  But two weeks ago spring was in the air.  Somehow, when there is a wave of warmer temperatures, my thoughts turn to the garden.  The bucket of leftover seeds which has been stored in a dry, cool place is brought out of storage.  I check the seed inventory.   Then the seed catalog from Rohrer Seeds is located.  It came months ago but unlike some gardeners, who plan their garden in the winter, my inspiration comes when I can plant within a week or two.  I look over the multiple varieties of seeds. The first ones I check are the cool weather crops like lettuce and spinach. IMG_20160330_180036988-800x450 There are forty two kinds of lettuce packets which can be purchased.   I read over how many days until it will be harvested.  Little icons describe whether it is an heirloom, organic, or best seller.  There are loose leaf, heading varieties, romaine, butterhead, and lettuce mixtures.  I choose a gourmet mix which has four varieties combined: red, dark green, light green, and apple green blend.   I envision a nice salad, fresh cut from the garden.  Then there is spinach, radishes, and Swiss Chard.  Choices!  How many new varieties do I want to try?

The seeds I plant in my garden have delightful names and hopefully bountiful crops!  The word of God is seed to be chosen and planted into our minds and hearts.  I can choose seeds of kindess, love, faith, courage, and hope from verses in the Bible.  You can look a word up in the concordance and find multiple verses and decide which ones to plant.  The weed seeds don’t need to be planted!!  It is like the thoughts of doubt, worry, anxiety, mistrust, and unforgiveness that are always ready to spring up in us if we give them any room.

So I am ready for seedtime!  There is an appropriate time for planting in my garden but planting the good seeds in my life is always important.

  1. Thanks for this post. I’m thinking of all the seeds I have planted and still want to plant to keep me “rooted” during our upcoming transition!
